The good 🟢, the bad 🔴, and the ugly🟡 in AI News today
Since I started curating AI headlines, I’ve realised that almost nobody, including me, really cares about categories. Releases, regulations, funding, partnerships, all these are useful labels, but they don’t tell me whether today’s news is actually good, bad, or simply ugly. So why force every story into a drawer?
What I do care about is the impact. Is it good news, like a scientific breakthrough or a new model release? Is it bad news, like restrictive regulation, copyright wars or geopolitical tensions? Or is it simply ugly—scams, crime, misinformation or fearmongering. Neither good nor bad, just ugly.
After playing with this idea for a while, I noticed that every day seems to develop its own fingerprint: a different balance between good, bad and ugly stories. So why not measure that?
Of course, this “GBU Index” is subjective. The selection of stories is subjective, and so is their classification. But that’s part of the point. It’s not trying to be an objective benchmark, it’s simply a snapshot of the AI landscape as I see it each day.
So, ladies and gents, without further ado, here’s the GBU Index: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of today’s AI news.
The size of each disc represents the proportion of stories in each category. I hope you’ll enjoy watching each day’s AI fingerprint evolve.
A final note just to be sure: ugly isn’t “worse than bad.”
It’s just the category for stories that make AI look grubby rather than consequential: scams, clickbait, fraud, deepfakes, fearmongering, bizarre incidents and other forms of AI-related nonsense.
As you can see, the today’s selection has more positive news than weird ones. And definitely more than bad ones.
